What would you do??

vendredi 31 juillet 2015

I mowed 15 acres yesterday of alfalfa. Hay didn't dry much since the humidity was high and partly cloudy. Today clear sky's humidity in the low 40's dried quite abit. But it has bleached on top because of the dew Thursday night and will have another pretty heavy dew tonight. Top half was stem snapping dry this evening. But the bottom half is still pretty green. Would you rake it up and hope it bales tomorrow night or let it lay tedded out till Monday morning rake and bale Monday night? Can't do anything to it Sunday land owner won't allow me to. I know it will be bleached pretty bad if it lays till Monday, and not sure the bottom half will dry since it's matted down pretty tight to the ground. I do use acid and the humidity is supposed to be in the 40's tomorrow night with highs in the 80's slight 2 to 4 mph wind.

Where to buy parts in Michigan?

With the closing of Stamm's, where are you finding parts for your older square balers? I have a New Holland 269 that I've been successfully baling with for years. The finger carriage extension broke today & I'm not having any luck finding a new part. Any suggestions?

Giving up on my gehl 1475, what to replace with?

My gehl 1475 has finally bled me dry. Bought it in VT for $2k 3 years ago as a parts baler. New belts, chains, pickup teeth, strippers, a couple bearings and the main belt drive roller machined, welded and rebearinged (is that a word?).

It's been one thing after another though. The computer never has worked, so I've used a double pole double throw switch to run the tie arm manually. I use a piece of twine with a weight on it that rides one of the guard bars on the front on the baler to tell how big the bale is.

Overall, I like the baler, its fairly easy to work on, but its obviously wore out. I'm looking for advice. I do 250-300 4' silage bales per year. I've got a lead on another 1475 that's running and going. Part of me says go buy that, use mine for parts. The other part of me says run, run far away. Buy some other brand with better support. Looking to spend 8-10k, +-. Suggestions?

Miller Pro 1150

I bought the rake about this time last year used. Been a good rake so far. But the last couple fields I've noticed an issue. The tongue and the running gear are not always lined up, could be 3 or 4 degrees to the right and left. Then the last field the rotors started hitting the swath board side of the guard. When I get down and look at where the gearbox and the running gear connected I can see splines.

I'm guessing it has to come apart. The question is can it be fixed? Its been apart once, before I bought the rake the dealer replaced the bearings on pto side of things so the spur gear made good contact with the bull gear.  A neighbor of mine swears once the Miller Pros come apart they will never be tight again. But that doesn't seem right to me. What sayeth haytalk?

Glut or Sparse - How's 2015 Shaping Up

In my neck of the woods, there was so much rain from Memorial Day to mid July that while much hay was finally cut and baled in mid July, from what I can see, it's over ripe, low quality hay. Being cut so late, I'm thinking a small 2nd cut.

What I'm thinking is due to the rain, quality of the hay when cut and lack of time for a decent yield 2nd cut that there's going to be a potential shortage of good quality hay going into fall/winter.

What are your observations?

Sitrex vs. befco

Looking at 2 different carted v-rakes, a sitrex h90-v8? (The ad has it listed as a h10-v8) for $4500 and a 10 wheel carted befco for $3000. I am nervous about carted rakes in general, is the sitrex quality worth $1500 for a smaller rake? Condition notwithstanding, as I have not looked at either one in person yet.

wheel lock on NH 276 Hayliner

Going to purchase (most likely) 276 that I baled with last year at small farm a few miles away.

Last year when I went to leave field the  wheel locked up. I believe it is supposed to when you want to fold or unfold baler for transport or baling. I think I just used some twine to hold it (a pin) in place but just wanted to know if anyone has advice on this. I'll only be towing it a few miles home but don't want wheel locking up!

Also anything specific to look for on a 276?

Hey guys, we purchased a used 535 last year and have had some issues out of the tie system.  Did massive amounts of searches on-line but was unable to find much information.  So decided to do a couple videos of the mechanism working correctly. Hope this can help some folks out who are visual troubleshooting mechanics like myself.

JD 469SS, trouble shooting.

Hello everyone. Been a big fan of the forums.
So, I have a 2015 JD 469SS and have noticed that the bales are soft right at the last six inches if a bale. I can stab my fingers six inches into a bale and push on the wrapped surface and can push about 1-2 inches in. Went to a neighbor who has a 467ss and his bales are nice and tight. I've noticed that when the bale is wrapping, the pressure gauge drops from where I like it to about half pressure. I'm going to call the dealer tomorrow and ask survice about it!
Thanks for any imput and God bless!

Hesston 7100 or 4550?

Okay, I studied and I read, before I bought a Hesston 4550, but somewhere I missed that Hesston makes a model 7100 small square inline baler. When did the the 7100 series go into production and is there any web site or reference for baler models and year production? Apperantly I can't keep up. Update me on the Hesston inline small square balers please.  bjr

A Non-Government survey on your row crop sprayer(s).

Hi,

My name is Jacob James. I work for a sprayer company and in collaboration with the marketing company, “J. Fitzgerald group”. We are doing a research on the possible trends of the US row crop sprayer market, and are looking for reliable participants willing to fulfill an online survey.

The survey is about the type of sprayers you have, what you would like to have, your practices and vision of the US market at the moment and its possible evolution on a long view. We also would like to know what you guys know about European equipment, and its environmentally friendly technology.

Participation only involves completing an online survey. Questions with the asterisks are compulsory. Apart from those, feel free to answer the questions you want. The goal of the questionnaire is not to force you guys to give us information, we only - and really - want to understand the market and get to know your specific needs.

The questions go in this order: your farm, your machinery, your vision of tomorrow, environmental implications, and finally your vision of EU equipment. I've tired it on a friend who took 15 minutes of his time to do it, but as I said you can take the time you want to answer to the questions you want to.

This questionnaire is totally anonymous and no personal information is demanded.
If you wish to take it, here is the link; http://goo.gl/forms/AbyPdkzaMa

Thank you very much for your time and patience.

Hope hearing from you all.

Jacob J  :)

brillon sst 1201

I just purchased a brillon sst 1201 seeder with dual seed boxes. It seems to be well taken care of.The one problem I do see is that it looks to be missing one notched packer wheel on both reels. Can I move the locking slide collar in to take up that 2 inch space? Also how should the rear notched wheel be aligned with the front packer wheel? This is the first seeder I have owned ,so I guess there will be a trial and error period with this machine. It looks to be an involved process in replacing one of these wheels. How hard will it be to find replacement parts for this seeder?    Thanks    Dan

Mowing with dew?

How does cutting with dew on the standing crop effect drying time? Are you better off waiting a couple of hours until dew burns off?

Sorry if this is a repeat topic. Thanks for any replies.

Putting up straw for a neighbor, what's a fair %?

So my neighbor has 200 acres of wheat he's getting ready to combine. he's going to cut it 6 in off the ground  and wanted to know if we'd bale the straw on shares.

Only thing is neither one of us has done that (just baling) and don't know what a fair precentage would be?   When we put up hay on shares (cut/rake/bale) we always ask for 60% which is the going rate around here.

So maybe 30% for just baling only?  What do you guys think?

NH1409 Discbine driveline repair

Well, last week I had just worked about 3 straight 16hr days in hay and finished cutting the last piece of second cutting.  Dog tired, blurred brain.  Folded up the discbine then had a panic attack that I had forgotten to cut off the pto.  so instantly hit the button and unfortunately, I had already cut it off so I ended up cutting it back on.  arrg!!!  only on for a split second but enough time to do the damage.  Twisted the main pto shaft connecting to the tractor with the excessively expensive CV joint.

Luckily, I was able to get a new front half and rebuilt the back cross assembly at Maugensville Industrial in Hagerstown,MD so we are back in business.   Those people are good to work with, fast and costs are reasonable.  cost me about $1100. total including delivery of repaired drive line to my shop door in less than 24 hrs.  Now if I could just get JD or NH dealers to work that fast, that well and that reasonably, I would be set...

need help with third function kit

mercredi 29 juillet 2015

Just got a new Kubota L39 tlb and trying to add third function kit on loader. I purchased the tl 1715 Kubota kit and it came with somewhat instructions and looks fairly easy to install but there is 3 or 4 3/8" hoses not shown in the instructions and I don't see any use for them. The valve is electric over hydraulic and has 4 hoses on it. Two goes to the front which instructions do not show how to route and the other two goes to loader valve and other end where you take the loader valve hose off of. Also the front coupler stay bracket does not mount anywhere on the loader that I can find. It came with new loader handle with buttons and master switch and bracket which all seems to be straight forward installation. Can anyone offer any install information on this kit .

575 NH High Capacity issue and resolve....

Was merrily bailing along spitting out idiot squares in my 8 week past cut hay when I looked back and my pickup reel wasn't picking up anymore.

Stopped the tractor and pto and got out and had a look-see.  The pickup was freewheeling so I went to the drive side, opened the access door and I saw the issue, the 'lost motion' reel drive belt broke.

I thought no big thing, I'll get a new belt (checked the manual, was 83" 5L width so I trundled down to the hardware store (10 miles from the field) and got one, came back and took a good look.  You cannot replace the belt on a 575 by just 'putting it on'.  You have to pull the spur gears (definitely a service call or a barn jub ot both (if I got it out of time), so home it went and in the 100 degree barn, sweating my arse off, I pulled the back gears, knotter came actuator, shims, all the while praying silently that I would not need a service (expensive call) to retime the unit.

Had to get a new woodruff drive key (the original one didn't want to come out nicely), cleaned up the actuator cam drive of old grease (I had to emery cloth the shaft end to get the paint off...), put on the new belt, adjusted the trnsion on the idler and reassembleled the drive.  While I was at it, I pulled the cap on the intermediate gear, popped the tapered bearings out and repacked them too.

Might as well repack the bearings wjile everything is apart.

I sure like the gear drive over the roller chains of old, but belt replacement got way more complex and time consuming.

Had my wife roll it over when I tripped it, everything ran as it should, took it to the field and ran off a quick 400 cubes (to finish).

I had a service call on order (cancelled it) but my dealer told me thjat no less than 4 others had broken belts this year.  Bad year with rank hay.  I had the original belt that broke and showed no wear (other than it parted company)....

All is well that ends well.  Cost:  18 bucks plus tax and about 5 bottles of coild water as I sweated my butt off in the barn.

Cutting fields that aren't square... grrr... Any tips?

3 out of the 4 fields I have aren't square.  Happens when you live on a rivers and creeks.  I have a NH 1465 haybine and I'm constantly struggling with finishing off the V's I end up with.  Hay gets caught on the right side if I drag it over a windrow to start cutting again.  Hay gets caught on the left side if I try that.  If I drive real slow I'm fine.

I don't remember this problem as a kid.  We had an IH 1190 haybine at the time, and I know that the left side of the haybine wouldn't catch on any cut hay.  You could drive with it down right through a dropped windrow and it would just eat it up.

I've checked underneath and everything that is supposed to be smooth is smooth.  I've played with different heights.  No change.

Any suggestions? (besides buying a discbine, which I'm sure fixes this problem quickly.)

Hydraulic Implement Problem

Over the years I've had mowers, rakes, balers etc that operated off the tractor auxilary hydraulics: no problem, never gave it a second thought. Recently I got a used Kverneland Silawrap 7550 bale wrapper with it's own pair of control valves, one unidirectional to spin the table and the other bi-directional to dump the bale. I connected the hoses, bungie tied the control lever on the tractor (JD, open-center), felt fluid circulating through the hoses and when I pushed the lever to lift the table, it moved maybe a few inches then would not budge. Nothing at all happened when I tried to spin the table. I checked all hoses, the cylinder, couplers, etc. for leaks: everything shipshape. This whole scenario is repeatable.

To troubleshoot, I wanted to bypass the implement controls and connect the table cylinder dirctly to the SCV which turned out to be not so easy as the couplers required to do this are real hard to find in this neck of the woods, and not cheap. People I've spoken with doubt there's a problem with the control valves, but don't have an explanation. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Who makes the best tedder?

Hey Haytalk Friends...

I have a New Idea 4227 4 basket tedder.  One of the tines broke, flipped up (inside one) and caught the guard ripping it right off.  It was so violent, it made the outside basket jump out of time.  I did pull the wheel off, dropped the basket and re-positioned it back in time, However there must have been some frame twist as now the one side is about an inch lower.  Very frustrating....    SO..... in the market for a new one.  Might even go to a 6 basket.  WHO MAKES THE BEST ONE???  I'm looking at either KUHN or KRONE.  Either one is so much more heavier duty.  I've heard on many occasions that one will go thru 50 tines on a "light" tedder before ever breaking one on a KUHN or KRONE.. If anyone has any opinions/experience, please share!

Also, any thoughts on a mounted tedder or trailed?

Mahindra 3505-DI hydraulic fluid

Hi all. Appreciate any feedback. Have the above referenced tractor with FEL. Need to replace the hydraulic fluid. In reviewing the original manual, it lists mainly 15w-40 motor oil options for my temperature range including She'll Rotella T....so confusing....motor oil inHydraulics, gear oil in tranny, and transmission fluid in power steering.

Local dealer is no help as they want you to buy the mahindra fluid........

Have read other posts on the web about using motor oil is fine, not fine due to detergents etc...

Vermeer 605F Baler Belts not Rotating

Thank you upfront for your time and advice.

I have a Vermeer 605F baler that the belts have always rotated once the PTO was engaged even without rolling hay. The other day a link in the larger longer chain broke and once i got that back together, the belts don't rotate but the rollers do. I can help move the belts along a little bit by manually grabbing them but they don't stay moving.

I've read on here where some baler belts don't start moving until they start picking up hay, but it just seems odd that mine did before the chain break. I'm wondering if i'm missing some other piece to this puzzle.

I might have to pick up some hay to see if it works but i thought i would try to fix it while i don't have any hay on the ground.

Any help is appreciated; it seems when things are running fine you don't really think about how they operate.

Long 610 opinions

My FIL had a 1980 Long 610 he wants to part with and I'm looking for opinions on it as far as a square baling tractor. The engine was rebuilt last year and has been run 50 to 60 hours since with a rotary mower or a caking machine. According to tractor data is a 64 pto hp tractor. Rear tires are about 60% and fronts are 95%. Sheet metal is great, paint is a little faded. It also has rear wheel weights. Anybody have opinions on these? It will be pulling a NH 273 and a JD 1209 moco. My biggest complaint is there's no ROPS and in limited search I havn't been able to find one

Starting to think about overseeding orchard grass this fall

I have cut my acreage back by almost half and bought a new GP no-till 10 footer last year in partnership with one other farmer.  So now it is time to think about over seeding and thickening up my orchard grass and mixed grass hay fields.

Each year I am faced with the same dilemma-  the bare spots clearly evident after second cutting will all have the very beginnings of winter annuals by the time to over seed is here-early September.  I can't spray in the end of September as it will hurt the orchard grass seedlings, late winter-early spring broadleaf spraying is not particularly effective here and if I use a cleanup spray in late april, the chickweed and henbit have already reeked havoc.

Any body solved this problem, and if so, how?

What to do with a hay crop?

Hi,

I recently purchased 3 acres of land here in Colorado.  We’re building a home on it.  I’ve never done any farming and I know less than zero about hay.  I was assuming the land was just some sort of grass that I could mow as needed.  But I just learned it’s a hay crop and the previous owner would bale the hay.  So what do I do?  Can I just mow it as needed?  Will a hay crop hurt the mower blades?  I was planning on just going out and getting a riding lawnmower and treat it like grass.  Or are there people out there that would come and bale the hay for me? Is there any profit in hay?  Just not sure what to do so wanted to get some advice from experts.  I’m not in a position to go out and spend money on farm machinery.  The seller is still going to be living on the property next to us so it might be possible to see if he wants to continue doing that for us, but wasn’t sure if it would even be profitable for him.

Thanks for any advice.

Jon

Question on moisture

A few weeks ago I bought a handheld Agratronix moisture tester.  This weekend while baling I was testing random bales and they were reading anywhere between 13.5 and 14.7 however when I back yesterday and measured some of what we had stacking in the barn I was getting 19 and some low 20s !  Is this because of the "sweat" and it will go back down once it's done ?  The temps were all fine, no major heat, just the high moisture reading.

Thanks for any input.

Liability Insurance

I have two parallel side businesses that my insurance agent cant seam to help me get insured adequately.

-One is my farming, that is fairly straight forward. Farm policy with the usual equipment, building and liability coverage.

-In addition to the farming I buy and sell some used equipment. Mostly skidsteers but also some other equipment. I do this on the side, when I have spare time. Although I make money jockeying the equipment its just a sideline enterprise. I work on the equipment on the farm, use it on the farm, then sell it from the farm. I wanted to just add some additional coverage to my farm policy. Agent says no, we need a separate commercial policy. Commercial policy wouldn't be through same company. Now if I have an claim at the farm I would have two different insurance companies pointing the finger at the other. Additionally since its two separate policies I have a good bit of additional cost.

Has anyone else run into this? I cant be the only one. I know a lot of farmers that also buy/sell for additional income.  Any ideas?

JD 347 knotter problems

Another knotter issues thread. Been having issues with the knotters on a 347 twine baler. Started last year in first cutting, didn't seem as bad or do it at all in second. Now this year has gotten progressively worse and acting up in second cutting also.

The knots on both side have some of the twine doubled back through and some bales will break as you get them off the chute to stack on the wagon. I wasn't sure if it was the knot coming apart or the twine actually breaking. Based on looking at some of the twine that came off the busted bales, looks like the twine is actually breaking most of the time and the knot staying together.

The twine doubled back through the knot is on every bale. The twine breaking is only 1-2 out of 20 or so bales, but last year was only 1-2 out of 100 or so.

Attached some pictures of what it is doing, and also of the billhooks and the bend in the knife arm. Do the billhooks look too worn or out of spec? And there are grooves cut into the bend on the knife arms - can this be filed or smoothed down again?

Based on looking through the troubleshooting in the manual, looks like these are the things to start with, but wanted to get ideas from you all. Thanks.

NW Ohio... alfalfa drowned out?

I hope I'm wrong!   We were lucky and got our first cutting done July 4th weekend.  All went well, but now we are noticing on the growth of 2nd cutting it's only about 6" tall now (been almost 30 days since last cutting) and it should be much taller.  It was a beautiful stand of 80% alfalfa and 20% orchard grass.   I plan on taking a good walk this week to see what I'm really dealing with (if mosquitos don't carry me away).  It appears from the road that much of the alflafa is gone, ill-colored or majorly stunted.  (only 3rd year on this seeding and it was absolutely perfect before 17" of rain in June and July)  We've finally got some heat and dry days coming the next week or so.. maybe it will spring back, but I'm not holding my breathe.  Anyone else around the midwest seeing this also?   It's been a year like no other around here...  as a matter of fact, quite a few guys are just now getting first cutting finished up this week.  It's not pretty, but if what I'm seeing is for real, there won't be much of anything to sell around here and any hay will be worth it's weight in gold this winter.

Balers

I am looking for a baler, I have been putting up hay with a buddy of mine, he has a John Deere 530 and I have the windrower and rake. Thinking of going on my own but don't know brand or size of baler would work best for me, I have never been in the market for a baler until now. I have been around a few and could work on anything if I need to, I just don't know the ins and outs of balers. I would like to make bigger bales around 1500-1700 pound bales, as I feed my own cows with the hay, I cut for other people but I buy their share so making the customer happy is not big deal.

Thanks

Oliver 620 baler problems

I just joined this forum and I apologize for jumping to ask for help right off the bat. But I'm in a jam and need help.

I have an oliver 620 baler. This spring I took the knotters all apart and got them working. Baled 50 or 60 some bales and it worked perfect. Friday evening I was baling and the baler jammed up (to much hay) so I backed it off and the dogs? Clicked. I unjammed it and kept baling.

A while after that the baler jumped out of time. Took it back up and re timed it. Saturday I started baling again and the knotters weren't working correctly. I believe they are out of adjustment. What was odd is that there were like 5 knots on the bill hook that didn't slide off. This happened later in the day as well. Now the knotters miss a bale after every 6 or 8. Can anyone point me in the right direction with this problem? I'm going to blow them off with air tomorrow before I start baling and try to adjust them again.

My other problem is that the plunger knife is dull and after I finish this field tomorrow I will sharpen it. But when I shut the baler off and then go to turn it on again the slip clutch in the flywheel spins. The flywheel doesn't. It's only the slip clutch. Is the clutch going bad or need adjustment? I don't have a spring scale to test it like the book says so if anyone has any other ways I could test it please let me know. A few times I would be able to turn the baler on and while just the slip clutch is spinning I would grab the flywheel and spin it and then the baler would start working again. Any help here?

It also jams up alot easier now than in the past years I've used it. I think it may be because of the slip clutch or the dull plunger knife. I need to fix this baler as soon as possible so if anyone can help please do. I'm also only 15 and the only one on the farm that knows how to work on the baler so if I'm doing something wrong please point me in the right direction. Thanks

Disc Mower curtain

Has anyone ever heard of or used any products from hay tools.com?  The reason I ask is I've been searching for a new curtain for my mower.  The one on it is shot and I'd like to put a new one on.   They use the black

  • 40 oz Rip-stop Nylon re-enforced PVC Vinyl-Made in USA
  • All seams are dielectrically sealed & not sewn- All one piece curtain- Not sewn like others
  • Grommets are strategically placed for tying the curtain to the frame with zip-ties

crop rotation

hello all, relatively new to hay talk. I'm sure there is a thread already formed for this but I couldn't find it. I'm hoping to turn some old grass/pasture fields into higher production timothy fields. I've already soil tested and know what I need to do on that end. What crops do you guys use to get your field back into production as soon as possible? Thanks in advance!

8511 bale thrower - losing momentum

I have a case ih 8545 inline baler with an 8511 thrower.

I can get the thrower going - sometimes it's slow to start. But when I push 12-15 flakes in a bale it cannt keep up. It eventually can't hit the wagon.

I changed the filter a year ago when it was acting up. Plan to get a new one in the morning.

But wondering if anyone has any other ideas. Is my pump shot? Any idea what kind of flow I'm supposed to be getting out of it?

Anything else I should look into?

Need help with NH 455 sickle bar mower

I just purchased a NH 455 sickle bar mower for $150. The mower works great but grass gets caught in the hole where the last
knife goes through the shoe at the end of the sickle bar. Over time, the grass bunches up and lifts the bar off the ground.

It looks like it's missing a part as there is a bolt hole close to the opening in the shoe in the end of the bar. I looked on
the New Holland website and the drawing isn't as detailed as I need. ( item #15 Part # 244273 on the parts diagram found here:

Can anyone tell me if there is a part that is needed to prevent grass from being pushed through this opening on part #244273?
Can anyone share some pictures of their 455 so I can see the right configuration for this shoe? Are there any tricks to prevent
this from happening? All grass dividers (what NH calls them) are in place.

Your help is appreciated!

Bale Bandit Pickup, Is this a fix?

There are a number of members on HT that have indicated problems breaking a twine on small squares on Bandit pickups.

My 100 series has a homemade pickup that in 6 years I cannot recall it breaking a twine.

Looking down on my pickup the width at the throat is only 16 inches which would seem to be too narrow for an 18 inch wide bale. If you look where the green and black broom handle is you will see it is only momentary the reduction to 16 inches and only on the 2x1 inch rectangular hollow section used, not the full height of the wings.

IMG_20150701_074626_zps8w5p62bi.jpeg

A couple of more views of the pickup on my machine:

IMG_20130928_080209_zpsejz7wpzq.jpg

2015-07-01%2007.39.57_zpsaxibifbg.jpg

The teeth on my pickup do not have the 200 series bridge welded across the top, tand although he teeth are rounded on the tips, the potential to break a twine would be greater because a tooth would be more likely to penetrate under a twine if the twine were across the path of the tooth.

Now let me be clear, I have never seen a 200 series but from descriptions and photographs, I think the throat (The point where the bale contacts the pickup chain) is too wide. I do not have the measurements but from photographs the throat is clearly wider than a bale.

With the wide pickup on the Bandit, I believe the bale has too much opportunity to be to one side and have both twines on the same side of the centre of the pickup.

When both twines are on the same side of the centre chain, when the chain penetrates the bale a little and lifts the bale the tooth in lifting the bale slips under the twine and as the bale is pulled up and into line with the pickup chute the bale is forced sideways and breaks the twine.

From descriptions, I think the bale enters like this:

2015-07-26%2021.47.56_zps77lsprxy.jpg

If I am wrong in this assessment then possibly not much point in reading further.

My suggested solution is to add new directing rails or shields on both sides and on the inside of the existing pickup wings to narrow the throat opening , so the bale whether perfectly aligned and square-on to the pickup or sliding along one wing always has the leading edge  centred on the pickup chain therefore the pickup chain only contacts the bale between the two twines no matter how angled the bale is between the wings.

With new directing rail/s on the sides the bale would enter more like this:

2015-07-26%2021.55.38_zpshoshrk1y.jpg

I cannot give measurements necessary because I do not have access to a Bandit Produced pickup.

The added wings should be approximately 16 to 18 inches apart at their ends and those added wings terminate level with the centre of the lower pickup chain idler wheel. The added wings also must be symmetricaly placed to the centre line of the pickup and chain.  i.e. each is 8 to 9 inches from the centre of the chain on the lower idler wheel.

If planning to make modifications, try a layout with a bale in all possible positions so as to determine measurements, angles and proportions, to ensure that the added rails still permit the bale to travel smoothly to the throat and chain.

It may be necessary to put a kink in the added rails , at the point where the Bandit's existing wings have skids under  or  at least on one rail, see the  pics above of my pickup and the wing on the right. Note the wing on the left is shorter than the other. This wing is opened only enough to run just inside the tractor's left rear wheel.

So the other wing can be set wider as it is away from thee tractor's rear wheel.

Soe may prefer to add a sheet metal additional wings rather than just rail/s.

Any comments and improvements would be welcomed by some frustrated Bandit owners.

And as they say in the classics  "any questions"?

Preservative Applicator For Small Squares Questions

Reading a bit about adding preservatives when making higher moisture hay - but have a few questions for small squares.

Sounds like Harvestec makes/rebrands for New Holland and Agco - I assume their systems are essentially the same?

How large of a tank of preservative is typically used on a small square baler? Initial cost for the system - ball park figure?

Once you've got everything set, as an example 22% moisture, how many gallons would one apply per ton of hay?

What is the typical cost per gallon?

Any sage advice is much appreciated.

Thanks!

Can hay be left on field ?

I cut a field and baled most of it (only just as kept having periods of rain) but one side was shaded by tree's and wasnt dry enough and had to be left. It was a very heavy crop.

I tried to mow it but it just wound round my mower.

Im now thinking that I either need to bale it just to get it off the field (the hay wont be any good now as its been rained on so much) or just leave it.

Im worried if I leave it it will kill the grass beneath it and then get a ton of weeds next year.

Any thoughts?

Teff experiment

I thought I would try to experiment no tilling teff into timothy stubble since timothy typically is a one cut deal here and goes dormant after first cutting until late fall. I cut the timothy in late June and had actually planned on no tilling rr beans into it and just using the timothy as an annual crop as that has worked well for me in the past. With the dry weather we had at the time though I felt that beans would be too risking of getting a good stand and by the time we started getting rain I felt it was too late to plant beans.

Decided to experiment and try to drill teff into the timothy without killing it with hopes that the mostly dormant timothy wouldn't compete too much with getting a good stand of teff and that the timothy would come back for a cutting next year without having to replant this fall. With the rain we got last week the timothy actually greened up and grew a little and I was worried it might be too much competition with the teff but I went ahead and drilled it anyway.

Drilled it 3 days ago with a JD 1590 using the small box, with the openers on the shallowest setting and the least amount of spring force on the press and closing wheel with the down pressure at the lowest setting. Looked at it today and to my surprise the teff is mostly up. Thought I would share my experiment and will keep you updated on how it does.

Best Small Square Baler

What is everyone's opinion on the best small square baler? I grew up with a JD 336 that has always done well, especially since most of our hay went to our own dairy. Now that the dairy operation was sold, the hay has become more of a custom operation. Looking for opinion(pros and cons) to those experienced with other balers. Currently we are looking at the JD 348, Hesston 1840 inline, and the NH BC5070 hayliner. Give me some thoughts please!

Addicted to Propionic Acid

I've run propionic acid now for a few years doing small squares, and well, I've gotten a bit used to always putting it on, even if the hay reads dry.

Yesterday I baled up hay that a few years ago I would have been pretty sure was ready to bale.  Tested 17% on the moisture tester, stems of the clover snapped nicely and didn't peel, twisted good in the hand, relative humidity was low, ground was dry.

Everything told me that it would bale nicely and keep - but I still put acid on anyways at the lowest rate I can go (4 lbs / ton).

Does anyone else do this?  I haven't made moldy / dusty hay since I bought a tedder and started using acid.

For those with bandits

I've never done much custom square baling as most all my custom work is rounds but I had some neighbors call with 200 acres under pivot that they are wanting me to square bale, they cut and rake all I do is bale and leave the bundles behind. So with that being said what would you charge per bale on a job of this size if it was you? All Input appreciated as I don't really know what is fair.

Brush hog then till, mow/bale then till?

I have a long term lease deal in the works and have a few questions on what you guys would do with this years "weeds"!  The plan is to some how take care of this crop, do soil amenities that are recommended from soil sample, chisel plow this fall, come back in the spring 2016 chisel, disc, pack, and seed to teff or some other annual for the summer.  Then fall of 2016 plant to an OG/Alfalfa mix.  With that, I can not use any type of chemicals on the property as it is in a watershed area and the company doesn't want to deal with politics of the sort.  I can fertilize how I see fit however no round up or anything along those lines.

1st field is about 11 acres, wooded on all sides.  Has a variety of overgrown weeds, seeded out timothy, over mature OG, and a barage of clover.  Some mole hills, and bunch of ruts from being brush hogged once per year by the company that owns it.  (First 3 pictures)

2nd field is roughly 4 acres with pretty much the same variety as first field.  (2 middle pictures)

3rd field is 35 acres on a decent slope.  However it doesn't seem to be growing much of any good hay able grass that I can tell.  Is definitely wet near the bottom. (Last 3)

before/after rain

Hey All,

I have about 15 acres of grass/alfalfa hay on the ground tedded right now, was hoping it'd be dry enough to bale before tomorrow, but now we're looking at 50% chance of storms tomorrow morning. My question is, assuming it rains ('cause why wouldn't it this year), is it better for the hay to be spread out or should I rake into windrows for the rain and let the ground dry out and re-ted to dry hay out after? First time with a tedder so not quite sure the best course of action...

Round up effects

Every year we plow up ground to plant oats to graze through out winter and into spring. This year our grass is so tall our tandem disk would never even get to the dirt. I'm thinking about shredding it and then burning it down with round up to make it easier to disk. It's all Bahia grass so I'm not worried about hurting the warm season grass stand. Just worried if this will effect my oats stand?
Thanks

Direct Baling of Straw

mercredi 22 juillet 2015

As a youngster in the late 1950's, my uncle had a Claas combine that had a small square baler incorporated to bale straw.

Today a small square baler could not keep up with a combine so here is one solution to achieve the one pass operation , heading, threshing, winnowing and baling residue.

Glenvar is a fairly large farm in Western Australia's Wheatbelt with individual properties spread over a large part of the wheatbelt. It is owned and run by the Shields family.
Te Shields family have proven to be innovators in machinery, agricultural practices and marketing, including developing markets for crop residue.
One major issue in continuous cropping is weed seed residue and if not dealt with the real prospect of developing herbicide resistance, so the Shields family progressed from residue carts to direct baling of residue.

Crops include: wheat, oats canola and lupins. Lupins are a legume fixing nitrogen and have a high protein grain, used mainly for stockfeed until now but there is a growing development for human consumption. The residue makes excellent garden mulch.
The link for wheat harvest:

https://youtu.be/T81UZ75qchI

The balers on the back of the headers (Combines) are featured.

The Bale Direct System with promotional videos:

http://ift.tt/1VyzQkL

The system is marketed in the US:

https://youtu.be/ODEeMIB--Fg

In Canola the farms harvested 13,000 hectares. One hectare is approximately 2.47 acres. so 13,000 Ha = 32,000 acres.
Promotional material is from Claas since 5 Claas combines were used in that year's canola harvest:

What Claas does not tell you, the business seems to have most manufacturers represented among the Glenvar combines.

Krone KR130 Tensioner Question

I recently bought an older KR130 in decent shape. The only significant problem was a bearing on the tensioner shaft had seized and crunched one side of the elevator chain into the axle beam. I removed the shaft, replaced both bearings, shims, washers, etc. and reinstalled it. It's clear that the chain tension can be adjusted by loosening the hex bolts and sliding the shaft up or down, but I can't figure what the function is of the large springs attached to the shaft brackets. Once the bolts are tighted, the shaft has no movement up or down -- how do the springs help to maintain chain tension?  In addition, the manual suggests not allowing the gap between the chain slats and the lower roller to be less than 20mm, but doesn't say what it  should be. Does anyone know what the gap is when it leaves the factory?

Thanks

New Hay Farmer - NJ

I have been reading posts here for a while now but things have finally moved forward with my Farm and if all goes well I should close on 43 acres (~20 Tillable) and a 20 acre tillable lease around the new year.

I am new to farming and new to Hay.  The farm and land is currently in Alfalfa with some orchard grass but is due to be replanted (Actually was this year).  I have tons of questions.  When to plant, what to plant, how to best prep the fields and sow the seeds, what size tractor,  and all the other newbie stuff.  I know all of these have been asked and answered in some way on this web site and I am searching the forum and getting lots of great info.  Thank you.

I will be getting some equipment with the farm but will likely need a tractor and a baler.

I'll take any help or advice I can get and would love to hear from some folks in my neck of the woods (SNJ).

Thanks again and I am excited to be joining your community.

Getting into the Hay Business/ Partnering

Seeking general guidance and opinions of seasoned hay farmers about interest in partnership.  I have come into some money which I would like to invest in land to grow hay.  I do not have the experience growing/baleing it though and am wondering if it's reasonable to pursue a partner who would either rent the land from me and then do all of the hay business, or perhaps (if it's more advantageous) share profits.  I'm not sure how this would best be negotiated and am very flexible.  Right now I'm just seeking opinions of whether this is viable.  I hope this is an appropriate site to ask this on and I appreciate anyone's feedback.  Thanks very much - Josie

Too many bales?

I found a JD 469 with 5100 bales on it.  The previous owner says about half were dry hay and half were corn stalks and soybean fodder.  The baler and the belts all look good in the pictures, but my concern is bearing life.  Is 2500 bales of corn stalks enough to seriously wear on the pick up and other components or am I being over cautious?  The baler is priced at $30,000 and is a 2014 model.

Hay Bale Loft/Hoist/Crain

Hello,
I am trying to create a hoist for my wife to help her with moving hay bales. I defiantly would be a great option, however travel a lot for work, so I sometimes am not a valid piece to the equation... A belt is the easiest for larger scenarios, however this is a lower budget, less frequent necessity, and much smaller stack. We have one barn were we store the hay about 30-40 bales, then a place in the barn where we have about 4 bales at a time stacked up...

My goal: Getting bale from storage stack to UTV, from UTV to Barn stack.

I drew up a plan I had thought of, but would be completely open and appreciate any advice or suggestions of devices for these types of scenarios.

From Storage to UTV:
My plan was a electric hoist, attached to a barn door rail. The hoist would be connected to a shackle, which would be connected to aircraft cable with two hay hooks. Stab each hook on each side of the bale, and lift which should choke the hooks into the bale.

UTV to barn:
This one I was just going to back the UTV up to the door, grab the hoist, stab one bale hook to the bale, and drag it into place...

Thoughts? I have seen some larger claw type hooks but seems too big for

hesston 3x3 baler comparison

Hello All, New to hay talk as a member but have been visiting awhile as a guest.  Have begun the process of searching for a used 3x3 baler as demand is climbing steadily here and just cant keep up with the small squares when busy.  I am wondering the differences between the three older model Hesston balers, the 4750, 4755 and 4760.  If just slight changes or some major upgrade to the advantage of the operations.

Newbie Winch Question RTV900 + Warn 3000-s

Greetings All!
Just got a new to me 2007 RTV900.
Looking to outfit it with a winch for occasional skidding of down trees and small stump removal.
Was thinking about the Warn 3000 model with synthetic rope. Would prefer to have the unit fit in the winch "cubby" upfront if possible. Searched the site with the RTV900 and Warn keywords but was unable to convince myself if I need any additional mounting hardware or kits to make this happen.
All comments /thoughts appreciated.
Thanks - great site!

Is it true about

lundi 20 juillet 2015

Is it true what people say about rain on hay just cut, that as long as it hasn't been raked it will be OK? Been doing hay for few years and never had a lot of rain just after mowing until tonight. Cut at 4:00 had rain at 11:00. Second cutting, if dry will it be any less nutritious?

Automatic chain oiler, chain oil

I have a John Deere 854 baler and have been using the John Deere lubricant for the automatic oiler. I would like to use something else that would be cheaper and still do the same job, would bar and chain oil for chain saws work? Is there something else you guys are using. Any help is appriciated.

TC35 water pump/fan blade

Hi all! I'm a new member and this is my first post. I own a 2003 New Holland TC35 and just recently had to replace the water pump. I thought about an electric water pump but decided against it because I didn't want to go to the effort of finding one that fit. But now I am thinking about an electric cooling fan to replace the water pump driven fan. My idea behind this is because only the bearing failed and not the seal on the w/p. On cars and trucks, using an electric fan increases HP output by 10 - 20 HP. Would it be worthwhile on a 35 HP tractor? If I had not caught the failing water pump in time and it had trashed the fan blade, I would have already done it. Opinions? Ideas? Thanks guys, this is a great net!

Moisture Sensor Placement, Small Square Bale Chamber

Hi Guys-

Have a Delmhorst FX-2000 with the bale chamber sensor on a small square NH316. I currently have it on the cut side of the chamber, thinking that will be the wettest part of the bale. I also have the Harvesttec Electronic Application system spraying CropSaver.

Question- Where does everybody have their moisture sensors positioned?

I recently baled some 2nd cutting alfalfa that was reading 16-18% with it placed on the cut side, didn't apply any acid, probed some bales later when done and they were 20+% in the middle and starting to heat. Lost a couple hundred bales to a little heat and mold. Good cattle hay, bad horse hay. I am always pushing the moisture level trying to keep the stuff green because thats what the horse people want.

Should I put it on the bottom or opposite side to get a better reading?

I hate to say it, but I am done wasting good hay and leaning towards just applying acid to everything for the peace of mind.

thanks for your help....

New Holland two rake hitch questions

Anybody used the old new Holland flat two rake hitches? I just picked one up, had the tires sealed/fixed, flipped it over for double windrows and am going to put it to use hopefully later this week. I run a JD 640&660 rakes as well as have a pinwheel. I'm looking to speed up the raking portion of my primarily silage round bale operation.

Any suggestions aside from scraping all three pieces and buying a rotary? If it works and speeds things up I may build another or build a gantry style, but for now it's a low budget experiment.

Fwiw, I'm looking at a 13' Kubota and a Vermeer pinwheel v, but for now, I can't justify $7500 for raking 300 round bales per year.

NH BB940A electrical problems

I have a 2008 BB940A 3x3 baler with about 36000 bales on it. i am having some electrical issues with it. my knotter fans aren't working, i replaced the fuses and relays and it still wont work, the Error code keeps saying that the relay is shorted or open. what could be wrong? Also my automatic greaser wasn't working and the error that came up was shorted or open relay line. So i replaced the relay and it worked for a little bit and then it quit working again. So what could be wrong?

Ragweed

Hi All,

I have a field about 16 acres of new seed grass/alfalfa mix planted this spring, came up great but with all the moisture we've had I was unable to cut when it should have been. My biggest problem as a little over ripe isn't a huge issue is that the field was taken over with ragweed. There is still a lot of good grass in there but I'm concerned about the amount of weeds (probably about 10-20% of the crop at this point...) I got it cut down this weekend to at least take care of the existing weeds, but am wondering what I can do with the hay. Is ragweed noxious in hay to where I need to just roll it and burn it or is it sellable as sub quality hay if I can get it dried properly (full disclosure of weeds and priced accordingly of course)? Just curious what my options would be with this. Thanks for any input, new to the hay game so still learning if this is a dumb question

What to plant?

Hi folks. The info on here is great.

I am trying to make dry hay for horses on some pretty tired fields. (Haven't had any cow manure or fertilizer or lime in quite some time). I wanna plow up a field that doesn't have much grass growing anymore and reseed it, hoping to get a crop by 2016. Any thoughts on what to plant? Orchard grass, Timothy, alfalfa etc. What would do well in the mountains of northeast pa.

And do I plant oats along with it. Field is well drained as its in a creek bottom.

Thanks in advance!

Going to be upgrading to newer square baler.

dimanche 19 juillet 2015

I currently have 2 balers.  A 336 and a 346, both in fair shape and great working condition.  I am thinking about upgrading to a 348 JD baler.  Before I pull the trigger what are the pros and cons on the 348?  I will never bale more than 6000 bales a year, 4500 is more realistic.

I am also getting rid of my 1033 bale wagon and upgrading to a 1037.  To me this is a no brainier.  I know a guy that has a 1037 and a 338 in great condition for 15k for both.  always shredded.  Does that sound like a reasonable price?

Reed Canary Grass

We have a stand of Reed Canary grass on some bottom land. Stand has been there 30 years or so. Only recently did we get the drainage good enough that we can cut it for hay. Is the past it was bushhogged. Often after it has gone to head.

The last couple of years I have mowed/baled before it went to seed. Although it still appears to yield about the same I notice that the stand appears thinner. I mowed it last the end of may. I walked in it today and can see the ground and each stem at ground level. From a distance it doesnt look "thin". Think I shouldnt take a second cut and let it go to seed??

Vermeer 10 wheel rake with splitter hp requirement

I have a 10 wheel vermeer vr1224 rake with splitter wheels. Found a new holland TN55 2wd tractor at a good deal. It says 30 hp requirement, but is that on flat ground? Will it pull it on steep hills? Tractor data says it's 36hp at the draw bar.

GoPro dash cams

I bought a inexpensive dash cam to try and thought it was pretty neat. Not the best picture quality but still neat. Ok, what I want to know is what is the best GoPro dash cam to buy. The GoPro Hero 4's are out as White, Silver or Black models. From what I can understand is that the colors may represent better quietly, not sure about that or if its just what ever color you like. Know nothing about this stuff and understand even less. If you have any knowledge about this stuff I sure appreciate hearing what you think. We are taking the RTV on a little trip to play and kind of like to get one for the buggy.
Thanks, Harry

SO GOOD TO SEE JAMIE ON HERE.....HEY BROTHER

Awhile back, I wrote about how my hired hand had rolled the RTV with some minor damages that were added to the list of broken equipment caused by him........YES HE IS GONE..... Anyway, as part of the repair, which was actually very minimal, was new window latches......That is the small little catch that is attached to the frame. It's a very small part that locks the window closed or open. Again, one has the part that you hold onto and push or pull to open and close the windshield. This is the part, the only one, that is actually attached to the frame. The rest of the part is attached to the glass itself............

So, I called Messick and talked to a super guy there named Bob.....he sent me parts diagrams in emails and I sent him pictures. The only thing that was available was to buy the whole gizmo. Latch, lever and associated hardware. All I needed was the little bitty part that goes on the frame............
SO, IF ANYONE NEEDS THE LATCH FOR SOME REASON..........IT'S YOURS
Otherwise it goes in my parts box/bin that is my use once in a lifetime supply area. You have one of these. A while back though a guy in Texas need an airfilter part I had so it blew him away that he could have it free........for freight....ISN'T THAT WHAT BROTHERS DO??
Oh yeah.....this is for a Curtis Cab glass windshield......
Anyway....it's yours if you need it..........God bless...........Dennis

Big Yellow Bar!

I just purchased a second hand tractor (JD 2720) which came with several attachments - some of which I would like to sell. One is described as follows and I have no idea what it is:
Yellow steel bar with 5 large thumbscrews along its length for attaching to the leading edge of the loader bucket. It's 60" long and has a nylon skid bar about 2" thick attached to the bottom. JD dealer doesn't know what it is(?)

Where are the New Holland factorys

I know that New Holland has a factory in new Holland Pa but where are their other factories? I think I read somewhere that they make the balewagons in Nebraska, been wanting to tour them. Has anybody here toured the main factory and when do they make the small square balers? Do they make them everyday or just certain times of the year?

Bought a 1209. Got to get it home

I bought a 1209 that cut the first cutting this year for $500 and got a NH 57 parts rake thrown in. Now I need to get them home. The rake is no problem. The 1209 is the question. How wide is a 9' 1209? Should I tow it or haul it? It's about 80 miles away. I can probably get it on a trailer sideways and either take the tongue off or turn it as sideways as I can to get it on. Which route would you go? Most of the roads are state hwy so 12 ft would probably be OK. 13 might be pushing it though.

Green Hay vs Dry Hay

One of my kids went to a horse camp for a week - learning to ride a horse, lots of fun - EXPENSIVE!!!!!! LOL!

Of course when we went to see the final day/closing show - afterwards, I met the owner and we talked and looked at square bales of hay.

All of owner's hay was dusty. All of it was nice and "green" in color and much of it was over ripe stems and seed heads. It was bought from a local brand name feed store and was $7 per bale!

I am very leary of green hay! I see green and think mold, but apparently the horse owner wants green hay.

How do you folks manage "green" hay and no dust or mold in the same square bale?

Thanks!
Bill

Vermeer 504 Super I baler

samedi 18 juillet 2015

Good evening.  I need some help with an error code my Vermeer 504 Super I is giving... E 64.  I've owned it for 3+ years & it has always baled perfectly... Literally blonde proof.  When I put it up from last cut in May it baled perfectly.  Today when I hooked it up it won't tie & gives the E 64 code.  It's getting power to the actuator, it will "extend" to start tie & gets "stuck" there.  I can do a manual tie as long as I hold the extend button for desired time & then retract to just before the "cut" spot for desired time, then retract again for cut.  It is a dual tie.  I am doing twine, not net wrap.  It has a net wrap option, but is not set up for net at this time.  Any suggestions are GREATLY appreciated.  Thanks

Reasons not to buy a NH Balewagon/ When to charge more.

I have been doing some custom hauling/stacking. I have made a few observations along the way.
1.If you have an inline baler and less than a 14 foot swather, and don't rake 2 rows together, you don't want a stacker.
2.If you have trouble making compact, square, and dense bales in grass hay, you don't want a stacker.
3. If it is more than about ten miles from the field to the stack, you don't want a stacker.
4.If your bale lengths vary by more than a few inches, you don't want a stacker.
On the other hand, if you build dense and consistent bales, rake two rows together or follow the right pattern baling, you will love a stacker. Under significantly less than ideal conditions (see 1,2,4 above) I was able to get almost 3000 bales put up in a day and a half.
Overall it was a good couple of days, and I am a little sore from all of the trips up on the second table to fix fallen, skewed, and messed up bales. I am still learning as I go, and have a ways to go yet. I am not a fan of lightweight (30-40#) grass 14X18 bales.

Boom sprayer roller pump??

I just bought a old century 500 gallon pull sprayer. It has a 30' boom but at one time it was longer. They took the end section on each side off. It had a 4 roller pump on it, but I told the guy just keep it since I worked out a cheaper deal on they sprayer without the pump. I'm thinking about going back to 42' booms. My question is will a 8 roller pump be enough to power a 42' boom at 30 psi and on 20" nozzle spacing?

Hesston 4550 baler stuffer fork adjustment?

I'm hoping that someone here has had the experience of Hesston stuffer fork adjustment. according the manual the forks have to be ajusted and then the needles(which is what I started to adjust in the first place). When I wen to do the fork timing I had to go clockwise on the sprocket tooth adjustment to get the plunger even close to the forks the manual says ccw. I finally was able to get maybe 1/2" not the 1/4"  between the plunger knife edge the forrks.Tthat was after about 5 hrs. of loosening the chain then retighten it maybe 10 times and never did get the grease fitting exactly centered in the access hole after adjustments were made. Whats up with the clockwise sprocket instead of CCW like the manual says? Any comments are appreciated, I'm all in and still have to go bale.  bjr

Organic Hay

I raise hay in north central ohio. I was recently approached by a landowner who wants to get his farm certified organic. He thinks the best way to go about this is to raise a conventional wheat crop. Then overseas with a grass/alfalfa mix. Now I understand what it takes to become certified organic. No GMO seed, no Comercial spray or fertilizer. But my question is this. In my mind the only way going through all the extra hassle of raising a certified organic crip would be if there is a significant premium to be had. I've never been approached by anyone asking where to find organic hay, I don't know of many organic farms in my area that buy organic hay. So how would I start to develop a niche market that would demand a premium for am organic crop?

MF/Hesston Inline Baler - New Model Differences?

Looking at the MF/Hesston small square balers online and it looks like the flywheel is now enclosed with sheet metal. Is this a recent change? Anything else change with it? Wonder how difficult this new sheet metal makes for changing out a shear bolt or greasing anything in that area. I think the model number have changed too.

Just curious.

Hay Hay Hay Wilson

Got a question for you,Over here in Panola county I have had two producers that have lost some of their tifton 85,just them 2 is all I know of and I planted it for them a few years ago and they were good hay fields but they use a lot of chicken litter,in this sandier ground is it possible for them to have too much potash or phosphorus? They have taken a soil test but didnt say if those were high just said they recommended 100 units of nitrogen after each cutting, could the soil be out of balance enough to harm the bermuda grass? I dont like chicken litter you never know what you are getting and today what they mix with the feed who knows?
