Brazil Approved to Import Beef to the U.S.

Brazil now has the green light to import beef from all areas of the nation. We have blocked them for years due to Foot and Mouth disease. Foot and Mouth is an airborne disease that once crippled the U.S. beef herd.

Our live beef prices are at a 5 year low. Now we are going to import frozen beef from a country that we have historically had health issues with in the canned meat we have allowed to be imported. Just recently we banned Brazil's canned beef products due to unsafe Ivermectin levels. The answer was to up the amount allowed.

Go figure.

So my son ordered a chocolate milk at a restaurant this evening (were going to go to mud bogs but got rained out... very perplexing I know...) so got the bill for the one, 12 oz. glass of probably 1 or 2℅ milk... $3.50!!! (Compared to the soft drinks being a full dollar less. No wonder milk consumption is down!) Comes to $37.33/gallon. The farmer producing it is getting paid less than half that for 100 POUNDS!!! (Approximately 11.6 gallons) I'm not very good at math but that comes out to $434 per 100 lbs!!!!! I realize everyone needs to make something along the way but that number is astounding to me. The average dairy farmer receives $15/100 lbs, which for most is less than cost of production right now. And the milk most farmers are selling is 3.5-4.5℅ butterfat which the processors reduce down and use the excess to make other products like butter, ice cream, cheese, yogurt etc...

I'm not one to complain, in fact I try to be a very positive person, but when the gap is this enormous I feel obligated to at least try to make people aware and to please support the dairy farmers and all farmers, especially the local ones. They put their heart and soul into what they do and often make a lot of sacrifices to achieve the lifestyle they love. With a lot of hard work, blood, sweat and tears along the way.

Feel free to share.

Sharpening batwing blades?

I have a woods BW-180 batwing bushhog.   Can I sharpen the blades without removing them?  Also I have a Makita 4 1/2 in. electric hand grinder.  Can I use it and what is the right grit to use?  Providing the answer to the previous question is yes.  Thanks!

Does width of cut affect dry down time?

I'm considering buying a new disc mower/conditioner. I've been looking at buying either a 10' 4" cut, or going up a size to a 11 1/2 to 12' cut. Assuming both machines are set up to make the widest swath possible, will there be an advantage to one or the other in drying the hay the fastest? Both machines would have some sort tine/finger conditioner, not rollers as I'm strictly doing grass hay for horses. No alfalfa. We make only small squares with a NH BC5070, and use a six basket tedder. Roughly 450 acres/year in upstate NY with lots of humidity.

Rained on Hay

I had a break down while baling and approx. 1/3 of my field did not get baled and it was raked.  Alfalfa brome clover hay and of course the weather changed.  I looks like I will not get any drying weather for at least a week rains every day total accumulation so far one and half inches.  Is it possible to save this crop for cows I know the nutritional quality will be poor.  New to this haying so experience is really limited.  Any information would be appreciated.

What Variety of Orchadgrass to Seed

samedi 30 juillet 2016

I'm starting to do some planning for the fall and I need to seed 35-40 acres back into hay.  In the web research that I have done and with Dad and I talking to some friends at the local CPS we are really considering going with orchard grass, maybe an orchard grass/timothy mix.  In searching through data on the internet all I have been able to do is confuse myself on which variety of orchard grass I should go with.  Originally I was thinking about Persist, but it seems that it might be too early maturing if I wanted to mix in any timothy.  So which variety of orchard grass would you recommend?  And as a secondary question what variety of timothy would you recommend to go with it?  Also what seeding rates would you recommend?

We are located in Western Kentucky and the ground is slightly rolling.  It has been row cropped for the last three years and currently has corn on it.  As soon as the corn comes off, I will work the ground to bust up the corn stalks, probably using a disc and unverferth double rolling harrow.  I will be renting a seed drill from CPS to drill the seed with.  My plan as been to cross drill the seed to make sure that I get a good, solid coverage.

Any thoughts about these plans?  Please let me know if you see something that is a concern you or if you thinking I'm making a mistake anywhere.

Thanks again

Greg

Which chopper for alfalfa?

Hey guys it's been awhile since I've been on here! Been busy cutting and baling hay. Just broke the 10,000 bale mark and still going when I can get the weather lol.

My question is I'm looking at chopping some pure alfalfa next year. Looking to buy a used chopper this fall. Will be using my 6120r to pull the chopper. I have heard chopping can be a rain pain with it plugging the blower and all. Which chopper would you be looking at with a 120 hp tractor and a budget in the $10,000 or less range? Also my tractor does have 540 and 1000 pto. Probably chop 100 acres during a season at first.

Anyone want to have a runaway with me

I have got the point where I wish I had never seen this Krone 3x4 baler I bought.  To start off, we had problems with the knotters, finally got that solved and now another problem comes up.  This damn thing has seen the inside of the Krone dealer than it has seen in the field.  If I had the money to buy a new one I would;  I guess I am going to have fix it, no other choice.  Worst thing is I have hay laid down, and no way to get into the bale.  At this point I would like to just fill it full of dynamite and watch it go boom;  can't, but it sure would be fun to watch.

Ph meter = junk?

Has anyone tried one of these? I wanted to check the ph on some ground i just acquired to assess how much lime ill need and for whatever reason none of the farm stores close here have the disposable strip type tests. My options were buy this dumb thing from menards or have the local coop send soil samples off to be tested which costs $30 per test and takes 2-3 weeks (im a lot more worried about the time then the $$$). Has anyone had one of these actually work? The instructions said to take a sample to test as opposed to sticking the thing in the ground, so thats what i did and the needle doesnt even move.

John Deere 567 feeding problems.

Started having problems with our 567 starting a bale. Seems like trying to start a bale the crop wants to hang up and roll back there for clogging the pick up up. So have to go way to slow to start a bale but once the bale is started I could go on. Crop conditions and windrows are good and never had the problem before. I did have a uper drive roll bearing fail about 75 bales into this problem occurring. (3hr run time) I replaced it today but I don't see that being the problem.
Thoughts?
Thanks.

DK55 A/C Shutdown

This issue is already solved but I thought that it might help someone with a DK55 or similar Kioti with A/C.

While mowing with my finish mower I ran over a small piece of a 4 inch or so limb. This resulted in the tractor and loader bouncing fairly hard. As it did, the A/C unit shutdown completely - No fan, no cooling, no compressor running.

I checked the fuse and relay, lifted the top and checked all the wiring connections for the A/C switches, blower, etc. The relay in the fuse panel (floor) had no power coming to it.

It took the dealer a day to run it down, finding that there was power leaving the key switch but not getting to the relay. The cause was a loose wire in a harness connector located on the engine side of the firewall. That 1 wire had slipped out of the connector.

He thought the loader would have to be removed to get their hands to the connector, but were able to gain access and find the issue without disconnecting the loader.

Please explain how it works.

DK55 PTO Won't Engage

jeudi 28 juillet 2016

I have a 2012 Kioti DK55 tractor, 4WD, loader, 600 hrs, and the cab with AC/heat. About a week ago I used it with a 7 ft. bush hog and had no issues. Today I fired it up to mow and the PTO will not engage.

I know the PTO is electrically operated and is hydraulic driven.

Here's what I tried - First I made sure the PTO Speed lever was not accidentally in Neutral and was set for 540 rpm. I then tried selecting 1000 RPM and back to 540 RPM. On the dash, the RED PTO indicator is ON, and on the right support the GREEN engage light is ON. I have also tried both AUTO and MANUAL settings on the selector switch. I have verified both the 10 amp fuse and the PTO relay are working properly. I have shutofff the tractor and restarted it several times, and also set the mower down petty hard.

All this has failed to get it turning, so I'm asking for some help.

Problems with Kuhn 10802 , 10 star tedder

We are into our 2nd year with our Kuhn 10802 tedder. We have had several problems with it in the first year. The tires wore only on one side and they sent us an update for that, then we had folding problems and leaking cylinder housing. The small field wheels will pivot and  allow you to angle tedder so not to throw hay out off the field edge. One of those wheel shafts has seized up. I have been told this is a problem. Machine is out of warranty but Kuhn agreed to provide some of the parts but no labor. Not overly happy with our dealer, they seem to want to charge a lot of money to fix. We have taken it apart ourselves and are having problems getting the shaft that seized up out of the rotor gearbox. We had to cut the wheel support off with the torch but I am concerned about getting too much heat at this gear box. Any one else had this issue?

Mowing for a Friend

I've got a friend that just lease 150 acres and has about 60-70 acres of it he is going to cut for hay. We loan each other equipment and have never had a problem with any thing we have helped each other with in the past, genuinely a stand up guy. The point of this though is he needs to upgrade mowers to a larger one but hasnt yet and asked me to help him lay these fields down. Mowing is all I would be doing and with my new Krone 3200 it'll be fairly short work. I am ok with him just paying for my fuel bc I might need help one day but he is insistent on paying me for my time. I have never charged someone just to mow and I don't want to twist his arm. Any suggestions?

Tedding alfalfa and dew

mercredi 27 juillet 2016

This is my first year running a tedder. So far good results. However, we have been getting some pretty heavy dew over night. If I tedd with the heavy dew am I going to lose RFV due to a larger percentage of the hay being exposed to the dew and bleaching?

I also have an old pull type conditioner that I can recondition with. Is that a better option?

Vermeer 7040 blade slap

Been running a Vermeer 7040 on a KMC cart a couple years now. Has the quick clip system. Been having a problem with the inside 2 heads having chunks knocked out of the blades. It appears the blades are striking each other when the mower is started or gets bogged down to the point of the belts slipping. Anyone had this issue or know of a fix? Maybe time one head back a notch?

Kuhn Disc Mower Pricing

I am leaning towards purchasing a Kuhn GMD3550TL disc mower.  Plain mower, no conditioner.  It is a little bit frustrating trying to determine if local dealer pricing is competitive or not.  Dealers outside of our local area are hesitant to quote because they will potentially sell into someone else's territory.  I understand a dealer protecting their territory but I also believe in free market capitalism.  That said, I have a quote from a local dealer on a GMD3550TL at ~$22K.  Any idea what others have paid or dealers in other parts of the country are quoting for a similar machine?

Selenoid maintenance on sprayers

My sprayer has four selenoids like the one below to control spray flow to each of three booms and a cluster nozzle

http://ift.tt/2acb9H4

Each time I use the sprayer, I have to open these selenoids and completely dry the internal components and oil the metal parts. If I don't do this, the internal metal parts rust and prohibit the selenoid from working. Do any of you use similar selenoids, and if so, how do you maintain them without having to open them and dry and oil the internal parts?

I'm heading out to purchase a 3206 tomorrow afternoon.  Anything special I should look for?  Guy said he had it apart recently to replace two inside turtle bearings closest to the 3 point.  He said the sector shaft looked good and it has all new blades with a decent tarp.  That's all I know. It is the same machine as the New Idea 528 I believe.

New Conditioneer Rolls

My NH 8080 with the 750 rotary head has 980 hrs.  The original rubber chevron rolls are getting worn out.  Time for new rolls.  I have always used the NH rubber chevron rolls.  However I have seen some really nice crimping from the steel rolls that NH now offers.  NH dealer claims the rubber rolls dry faster but I am not convinced.  Steel sure is working good for Hesston.  Who has used both in alfalfa and how did they compare?

newbie protein question (west v. east)

I am told dairies in the Midwest import a lot / all of their hay because the protein content out West is unparalleled. I am at an organization (northern Indiana) where some acres are transitioning to organic... looking to understand markets. Would local organic dairies be interested, at all, in our local organic hay? Even just to mix in with other hay?

What is it about the West... strictly climate? Soils?

Farmers fight for the right to repair their own tractors

Farmers fight for the right to repair their own tractors

By Elizabeth Armstrong Moore Published July 25, 2016
http://ift.tt/2ap7nQz

Farmers in Nebraska, Minnesota, Massachusetts, and New York are staging something of a mechanical revolt. They're attempting to get legislation passed in their states that would enable them, for the first time since the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act, to repair their own tractors or get an independent mechanic to help.

At the root of the morass is the software that helps run modern tractors and their sensors, diagnostic tools, and other high-tech elements. If farmers so much as open the metaphorical hood to check out the computers they could be violating the federal act, reports Modern Farmer.

Mick Minchow, a Nebraska farmer for more than 40 years, is among the many who are fed up, reports Lincoln Journal Star. As it currently stands, any problem with his John Deere 8235 R requires a trip to the dealer and costs him important time.

What he'd like to be able to do, per the paper, is something as simple as looking up the system code to determine if it's a serious problem or something as mundane as replacing a filter.

John Deere's argument, as reported by Wired, is that giving farmers free rein over the software would "make it possible for pirates, third-party developers, and less innovative competitors to free-ride off the creativity, unique expression, and ingenuity of vehicle software." Other potential issues that have been floated: the financial hit such a change could wreak on dealerships, and the complications of buying used equipment whose software was improperly changed.

In-planting hay field - no till drill or other way

I live in SW Colorado have a small irrigated hay field consisting of various types of grasses and clovers. This is old school mix and a lot of blue grass, short fescue has crept in. I was thinking of cutting it very short and going through it with a no till drill and adding Timothy and Orchard grass which is popular around here. Can this be done, and when is the best time. I am getting different opinions here . I want the field to stay sodded over as it is used as a winter pasture for my horses.

The other item I plan to do this fall is plug aerate heavily. It needs to be done to get better water penetration control. If I do that can I broadcast the mix and have it grow out of the plugs? Just thinking out loud here.

I do have an agg service here but they are always busy, but my COOP is good at recommending seed varieties.

Too much Crop Saver?

dimanche 24 juillet 2016

Baled 2nd cutting of alfalfa/OG at 20% moisture adding crop saver ahead of the rains. The help was on the baler while I was on the hay grapple. Every so often I look over to see she stopped to take care of a problem. When she got off tractor to attend to the issue sometimes she did not flip the switch to turn off the spray tank. Hay got real wet with crop saver which I notice when I picked up the hay. When I looked at some of the bales looked like couple flakes were real wet. With that much crop saver is it unsafe to feed? I sell about 60% what is made.

When do most people rake?  After a good day of drying do you rake in the evening before the dew sets in or do you leave it until morning and rake after the sun has burnt off the dew?

Lately I have been waiting until the next day and then flip it after the dew burns off.

Also most people say use 1:1 roundup/water. Anyone ever use Crossbow or 2,4d? I only want to kill broadleaves so why use Roundup???

Farmhand accumulator hyrdaulic question

I have been reading some forums on here and other people have been having the same issue.  I have a farmhand F-100 accumulator with the pump being driven off the flywheel and the ejector will only work on the top side of the adjustment.  If you slow it down below half it will push across to pack, but will not eject.  One person on here had that issue and it was oil viscosity and I am currently using Case hy-tran in it and they mentioned using 30 weight oil.  Is that the case or is there other issues to possibly to look at?  If it is the oil, what is the best brand to use in them?  The book says Farmhand hydraulic oil, but it doesn't exist, so I thought I would throw this out there.

Thanks

Alfalfa 2nd Cut Baling Delay

samedi 23 juillet 2016

I live in Central Illinois and have not been able to get all my alfalfa hay fields baled for 2nd cutting due to rain and humid weather. The oldest has been fully blossomed since the 2nd week of July and is fading color and laying over. Some has turned yellow, but I thinks that's bugs.

My question is this.  I will eventually ( hopefully this week) round bale this hay and sell to some good long time horse customers. Will this older faded hay not be as palatable to their horses. In other words is their a chance they won't eat it.  I'm sure the protein count will be down but I don't think that will be an issue.

Any experiences here?????

I would rather not sell them hay, than have them unhappy because the horses won't eat it.

1431 roller settings? Long time to dry....

This is my first mow / conditioner and I'm not happy with the dry time on the hay. I thought the hay would dry faster when conditioned. But we seem to have the opposite. In fact it would appear the hay mowed without the conditioner is drying faster. I read the book , but have not found any help.
I'm mowing typical mix of grasses for Mo. Not real heavy. I have the windrow shields open as far as they will go and the swath gate at midway.
As the hay starts to dry , the top will progress fine, but the underneath does not.
So, what am I doing wrong?
Could the rollers be set to loose?
Any help appreciated!

I'm hoping I can have the field cut Monday or Tuesday. Aiming for a Saturday of square baling. I've learned I have a lot of red clover and a good deal of Orchard grass. I'm looking at 4 or 5 days of drying. Weather will be decent. I'll mainly be fighting humidity. I'll be trying to adjust my NH 256 rake to make a fluffy windrow. I also read to rake it early morning the day of baling. Something about the moisture or dew helping to keep the shatter prone leaves from falling off.

Big square balers

vendredi 22 juillet 2016

The opportunity to plant a little over 100ac of Alfalfa presented itself the other day, love putting up alfalfa and bales sell quick, the only problem that I have is timing. I don't think my small square Baler could do that much alfalfa in addition to my existing feilds with short windows, let alone pick them all up. My idea is to get a used big square Baler. Round bales around here sell for half the money of big squares and with renting all my ground, price per ton is important. So is a used square Baler worth while? What bale count is too many before a baler gets labeled "wore out". I like the idea of running 3x3 due to less horsepower requirement. Saw a 4755 Hesston sell for $15,000 with 40k bales thru it. Would a 4440 run something like that? What is it like to maintain a big Baler? Any input is appreciated.

Windrow issue with a Massey WR9770

New to my brother used WR9770 with the Twin Max conditioners.  Cut some oat hay today with the swath control set for maximum width, about 8 feet.  I notice that the edges of the swath are quite a bit heavier than the middle, evidently from the crop that has to get pulled in from the ends of the head.  I saw this with the HW325 New Holland also, but it did't seem quite as bad. Is there a way to reduce or eliminate that heavier edge?

Red clover

So I've been reading a lot about red clover hay... It seems like there are a lot of very different opinions on it. I have a lot in my field mixed with what I believe is Orchard grass (grows in clumps) some people say it's high in protein and other minerals. The salvation issues is due to a fungus that could potentially grow on the clover not the clover itself. Any ways.... My horses love clover so it'll work for us. Any other opinions on it? I mean it's a legume same as alfalfa... Higher protein and minerals that straight grass hay. How bad could it be?

Also looked at the new 141GX?? They had there.I see they are burning DEF now.

They want to bring a skid out for me to demo. Not like some dealers that just expect you to buy it.

Very good family owned dealership.

Vermeer 605M Belt Tensioner Idler Roller bearing replacement

One of the belt tensioner rollers in our 605M is out!  What is the best method of getting the tensioner raised up to the access holes on the sides so we can get a socket on the end to take the roller out?  We thought of unlacing the belts, but didn't want to do that if it's unnecessary.  Do we disconnect the springs and hydraulic cylinders on each side and raise manually from above?  Please help!!!  I called our local dealer and they aren't sure either...Vermeer is not that big around here anymore.

Mini telehandler

Thinking of buying a jcb 520 or something similar. Main reason for purchase will be stacking small squares in the barn, then pulling and reloading. I need the extra height that a tele offers over a skid steer. I have found several of these around '07 models with 2500-3000 hrs for 20-24k. I'm sure I'll put it to use for many other chores as well. I have ran much larger tele's on construction jobs but never been on one of these small ones.
Any insight? JCB 520 good unit? Only reason I'm looking at this particular model is price and availability in my area. Most of them look to be retired rental units.

Summer lambing @1/4 done

It seems sheep (all livestock really) tend to have critters on the worst days possible. “Red”, as #261 is known (a lot of my sheep have names; some, like Red, are not too imaginative)...Red had a pair of twins on 1/8/16 and I happen to remember that the weather was CRAPPY as one of the lambs was stranded outside of the barn on the other side of the gate that she had laid against to give birth...squirted the little feller outside of the pasture and he was dead bc she couldn't get too him.

Today, she had another set of twins. Nice little ewe lambs. I reckon I will keep the black one for a replacement as Red is getting old and her bag is lumpy. Today's heat index was 108 (might have been more, but that's what I heard on the radio at one point).

Either hotter than the hubs of hell or colder'n a well-digger's... Seems they can never pick a decent day.

I think the black one will be “Betty Bamba”

Baler not cutting plastic string?

I decided to switch to plastic string from grass sting because It won't rot on the bottom if leaving hay outside.  Anyway, is their an adjustment I can make?  Baler is a John Deere 458 standard.

Horse nettle

I sprayed some horse nettle in a hay field a week ago
It's dying and showed signs of it day 1 .

Question

As the plant dies will the stickers on the plant soften and dissipate with the plant or is this hay gonna have stickers in it?
Rendering it useless for horse hay?

I sprayed it in flower stage as recommended.

Massey wr9870

Well guys I am the "new" owner of a used 9870 it's a 15 model with around 435 engine, 235 header hours. 9195 head it should be delivered Monday, pics to follow. problem is chickasha Oklahoma is a long way from Arkansas besides blades what are the biggest wear/ break items I need to be stocked up on. Livingston is the dealer they told me to make a list of what I need and they can ship it to me. Also any pro/cons on this machine. We was looking at a w235 Deere and the emissions was scary, along with the cooling setup didn't look up to par. The new holland machines look like a (shorter) term machine,we have had several pull behinds and the Cutterbar always seemed to be the weakness jumping time and just in general more wear for amount done, these were the mow max 1 type. This will be the first swather on the farm going from a mid pivot Deere.

Krone EC3200 vs Kuhn GMD3150TL

I know there are numerous threads relating to Krone and Kuhn disc mowers individually but I am hoping that someone has some insight previously unshared.  I will be selling one of my JD2280 swathers and purchasing a disc mower shortly.  It is a toss up between the two mowers listed above. I do not need a conditioner. I am leaning towards Krone but the Kuhn is $3000 cheaper.  The dealers are across the road from each other and comparable in the service they deliver.  I am leaning toward Krone mainly because I have had zero issues with my tedder and rotary rake.  As I understand the Krone SafeCut requires the replacement of a $2 roll pin.  The Kuhn requires the replacement of a $200? gear assembly if something solid is hit with the cutter bar.  I am not sure how often the cutter bar protection features are used on a disc mower but it seems as though it could add up in a hurry.  I am asking for your opinions on either unit and answers to the following questions:

1.  How often do you replace the SafeCut pin or Protectadrive assembly in a season?

2.  How do disc mowers perform when grass is laying flat?

Thank you in advance for your responses.

Timothy hay in iowa - questions

Is seeding around october 1st a good idea or am i better to wait until early spring? If i seeded this fall, how early in the spring would i feasibly be ready to cut? The ground is currently pasture but hasn't been used in a couple of years. We plan to burn it off the 1st of September. If I wait till early spring to seed, would i want to apply lime this fall yet or wait until spring?

Update

I had a technician come out today to look at my knotter. I was sort of in the ball park on my diagnosis. To make a long story short he replaced a simple spring. It was related to the twine finger positioning.

We ran it through a manual cycle and he was pulling on the twine and it knotted perfect. I didn't really want to pay him to help me run already baled hay through it so that's how we ended. My wife and I will test it out Friday. He said everything looked in good condition and he didn't think anything else needed replacing. So in the end it was simple and I was close to figuring it out. Glad it's done though. Thanks for all the help to everyone that contributed.

Worried about heat stress and extra shrink on calves during shipping and market. Also worried about buyers worrying about heat stress. Calves are 500-700 lbs. weaned. 80+ head, the market is about 30 minutes away (will take us 5 loads).

Harvesting teff -- what works best?

Making a new teff topic.

I've got a small 2 ac patch with tiffany teff ready to cut next week. Planted badly with low quality broadcast so some areas thin and weedy others are very thick.

I've got a jd mower conditioner, Tedder hay rake and baler. Will be small squares for horses.

I plan to cut in early am to keep sugar content down. What's the method for harvesting a dry crop? I'm in mid michigan, normal 1st cutting of mixed grass in late June takes 3 or 4 days.

How does teff compare?

Thanks!

How soon to spray weeds

I over seeded my hay field last fall. Some of the grass didn't come up until this spring. I have hayed the field off and now the weeds are coming in thanks to the moisture we have been getting. Is it ok to spray the weeds or should I just mow it down?

Thanks,

Matt

John Deere 7000 Net Wrap versus 9000 Net Wrap

I just purchased a used John Deere 568 round baler. The gentleman that owned it prior to me said to use John Deere 7000 Cover Edge net wrap as opposed to the Cover Edge 9000 as it was weaker and was not holding up.

As I called around all the John Deere dealers within 100 miles of me (4 different dealers) they are handling Cover Edge 9000 only and claim there are no issues with this product.

Anyone had issues with this 9000 Net Wrap.

P.S. Not looking for alternative brand advice as I will stick with John Deere.

Removing Lacing pins on Deere baler

Replaced all but 1 of the lacing pins on my 567 yesterday. The one I couldn't get out is broken into 2 pieces, I worked on it for an hour or so with a pic and couldn't get it out. Anybody have any tricks for getting these out? Guess I can just run it till it breaks and repair it in the field, but I hate doing field repairs!

What is the most common grass in your area

dimanche 17 juillet 2016

Was doing some thinking today and got to wondering in different parts of the country what the most common perennial naturalized or improved grass would be? Thinking about not only in managed hay fields but pastures, and other open areas as well. Not talking about weedy grasses.....thinking like orchard, timothy, brome, fescue, etc.....

Here it is by far fescue. Pretty much every pasture is fescue, road sides are mostly fescue, any hillsides and open ares not in forest or brush is fescue. Most all grass hay around here is fescue as well. Seems like this is pretty much the same for the whole upper and mid south. Just curious about what other areas are like.

Alfalfa question

As many of you know this is my first year haying my fields. They were seeded last year so I didn't really know what to expect. I am seeing a lot more alfalfa this second cutting. I don't know when the optimal time to cut alfalfa is. I read 10% bloom but I don't know what that means.

Alfalfa question

Best way to thin out alfalfa

I seeded a new pasture in Spring of 2015, took two cutting of hay off it, and turned the cattle out Spring of 2016.

It is specifically a "grazing mix", made up of 20% grazing tolerant alfalfa, and a mix of several grasses and clover.  It looks more like 75% alfalfa.  I have been worried about bloat all year, but haven't had any problems until last night when two died.  Really upset as it is meant for grazing, and I am a small producer so I took a big hit.

Any ideas on how to thin out the alfalfa and get the grasses to take over?

I rotationally graze so I can bring a few bales of dry hay every time I move them, but thats not solving the problem.

Timothy 2nd Cut Trigger?

As I understand it, a second cut of Timothy is generally not realistic. Hot summers and the grass goes dormant.

I've got two fields of Timothy, first year for each. One is climax and the other is Clair. IMHO - the climax Timothy is done for the year. The Clair Timothy has greened up and grown at least a foot or more. While it's hot now, here in the mountains of western VA, we've had a goodly amount of showers and thunderstorms. If this Clair keeps growing, I'm thinking I've got a second cut.

However.....

I don't want to deminish the life of the stand. I'm cutting at 5 inches.

What is your trigger for taking off a second cut of Timothy? 12, 18 inches regrowth, never cut a second time?

Thanks,
Bill

Kuhn MoCo finger/comb vs V-tine

samedi 16 juillet 2016

I'm thinking of trading my sixteen year old Kuhn FC302 discbine at the end of the year on a new one. Kuhn no longer makes the finger/comb conditioner. I mow roughly 300 acres/year, all grass hay. Small squares for horses. No alfalfa. Kuhn makes a finger conditioner but with no comb, similar to NH, and I'm also considering a Krone 3201cv, and a Vermeer 3300 with v-tines. Does anyone have experience with these mowers? How will the v-tines dry the hay compared to the finger/comb? Will the v-tines become less efficient as they wear and become more rounded? The FC302 has been very durable over the years, so putting a couple grand into it and running it for a handful more years is an option as well. I've looked at a New Holland H7330. It didn't look as durable as my old Kuhn and doubt it would still be in great shape after 16 years. I'd love to hear some opinions on any of these machines.

Great Plains solid stand

Recently purchased a Great Plains solid stand 15 with center pivot hitch. It's an 89 model. I know the older models such as this are quite set up like the newer models. Any recommendations on add-ons or set up? It only has 2400 acres on it but I'm going through replacing all bushings on the row units as well as coulter spring bushings. I have heard to add weight to the caddy. 1000-1500 lbs. either use weights or water filled tanks. I just want to upgrade what I can on it to make it efficient.

Mowing Stunted 2nd Cut Early?

Hey guys, we took our first cut of Orchard Timothy native grass mix here in Massachusetts off between the first week of June and June 15th. The regrowth on 2nd cut has been only about 1 foot in the past month if that, due to the lack of rain we have received. I think the grass has been stunted and I do not feel it is going to recover for a good 2nd cut let alone a third. What someone recommended was to my second cut now even if it is only 20 Bales per acre and not the normal 60 just to get it off and promote regrowth of the grasses. Has anyone ever done this before? Any thoughts or ideas on this? Thanks in advance as always and look forward to everyone's ideas.

LAMB PRICES PLUMMET LOCALLY FOR ONE PRODUCER

vendredi 15 juillet 2016

Well, lamb prices took a nose dive around her y’day.
I was outside flipping square bales of hay in the sun. Why?, you wonder… I had a nice little patch of lespedeza/OG mix that I worked and seeded this year. It was a really nice looking field with good yield and few weeds.

The day before yesterday, I was out baling the hay with my trusty ole NH269 and accumulator; out of nowhere came a .15” rain. It didn’t bother me so bad that the unbaled hay got rained on, but the 10-bale pads lying throughout the field got wet on top. Grrrrr, cuss, cuss, grrrrrr.
First year with accumulator and never experienced anything like that. Dumbfounded with a new-found way to take it in the shorts from mother nature, we scrambled for the best way to handle the situation. We thought about leaving them in the field (they would be sitting on dry ground and there was only 10% chance of rain for the next day. Uneasy gambling my hay away, I loaded the now-wet hay on the wagons and put them in the barn.
It way my day off the next morning and I was in no hurry to get out of the fart-sack. Honey wakes me up to tell me that I’d just as well sleep in because we got 4” of rain overnight. Well, she’s a dirty rotten liar…we only got 3.9” total!!!!
I wait until about noon- until the front yard (a rolling hilltop) had dried a little. I unloaded the wagons onto the less than soggy ground to dry out.
About 3 hours later, I’m out there flipping the bales like I’m frying taters in a skillet. It’s a tightrope act to keep flipping the bales so the top dries more that the bottom absorbs.
By this time, I am experiencing a physical phenomenon that I attempt to avoid…my skin is leaking this clear salty liquid at a profuse rate and I hear a rushing noise in my ears. I’ve had this before…right before taking a faceplant in the dirt. I stood erect to catch my breath, but the rushing noise didn’t go away.
Lo and behold, it wasn’t my heart-pressure, it was a truck coming down the driveway (3/4 mile from the hardroad…) and I don’t recognize it.
I tap my pocket to make sure, and start walking toward the truck, but he don’t see me (I don't like being seen until "it's time"). He pulls into the gates leading to the just-rained-on hayfield with his diesel one-ton with a 24’ gooseneck in-tow.
I’ve can exhibit a couple of different demeanors…he got the blunt, to the point one. I hollered HEY!!!, and he mashed the brakes. I walked to the truck at a rather brisk pace with hay in my horns. I let loose with “who the blank do you think you are, what the blank do you blanking think you’re blanking doing? So you're such a blanking blankety blank that you think you can just drive up my blanking road and drive around in my blanking hayfield??!! WHO the BLANK are you and what the blank are you doing here?
He said " I’m (a name, but not person that I recognize) and I guess I’m lost; I was going to (neighbor’s name) to get a load of hay." Seeing as how I had approached his truck from the passenger’s side, I walked around to his side…with a fairly determined stride. I recognized his name to be the son of a person that me, my uncle and my dad have dealt with…his father had passed away a few years ago. This guy had moved back to the area and was going to begin buying sheep, and livestock as his father had.
Like I said, I walked around to his side of the truck without letting the grass grow under my feet. He is a rather large lad, but I think he feared that I was gonna yank him out thru the wing vent. I jabbed my paw thru the open truck window and said “nice to meet ya. Ifn you cain’t tell, I’m having a piss-poor day and you just caught the culmination of it” We jabbered for ½ hour or so before he headed to by hay from the neighbor that I had baled as a custom job.

He claimed that he didn't mind my demeanor, and it reminded him of his dad in that you didn't have to wonder what was on my mind either.
We’ll see how much he remembers the encounter when I call him for lamb prices when I have the next load ready to sell. The next door neighbor (@2 ¼ mile away by road-3/4 miles as a gut pile smells) called me last night to let me know that I left somewhat of an impression as I was the talk of the hay transaction.
I sure WAS looking forward to him to start buying as it would be ½ the distance I am currently hauling… I ain't betting that prices haven't plummeted for a certain producer.

Oh well, it won't be the first time that bumpin my gums has cost me money...but I sleep good at night 'cause it ain't all bottled up.

Flooded field what to do?

Hey guys I live in northern WI we got pounded this week with rain and Mon night our farm went waist deep in water. Got animals out barn shop and garage had 3 feet of water in them. House is on little hilland iI had four pumps running last couple days to keep out and luckily no issues there. My question is now the water is receding and leaving behind 6-8 inches of gummy silt. Building can be washed but what dose a guy do with the hay fields. Burn em? Plow em any suggestions appreciated.

30 acres of orchard/timothy

I got an opportunity to cut, bale and keep 30 acres of very clean orchard/Tim. I was referred to a 90 yr old farmer who has become unable to farm anymore from another customer.
I began cutting yesterday and plan to finish today. It's a little past its prime, but the Timothy looks awesome.
Now comes the "problem". I don't have the customer base to buy it....
Could be 150-200 round bales.
I'd hate to see it sit outside and go to waste.

Suggestions?

X 1120 D Mud Tire help.

Hunting season is coming up and I am in the market for a set of tires to help with traction in the mud. The OEM ATV tires are worthless in the mud. I have looked at the Maxxis Zillas, and they have good reviews, but only a 6 ply tire and I was worried about max weight load. Also, to gain a little ground clearance, I was thinking about turning up my shocks and running 27" tires. I was wondering if anyone has run 27" mud tires on their X series without clearance/HP loss? Any help/recommendations is appreciated.

Most of you probably already are aware of this, but I certainly wasn't. When I turned monitor on and pushed cal. button I got "err" message and 14 -16% reading with no hay in baler. Finally remembered, last job I did was 15 miles from home,so I left baler in field. Got 1/2 inch of rain. Long story short. There was a little dirt, dust and water behind sensor pad giving false reading. Cleaned pad and side of bale chamber, problem solved. BTW round baler, guess it could happen on square also.

Starting Hay Farm

Hello All,

Im new to the forum, and i had some questions i'd like to ask.  My family has 160 acres of Irrigated land in Central Oklahoma that has been rented out to a farmer for the last 17 years and has been taken care of greatly.  I am wanted to put it in hay possibly and wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions. I was thinking 80 acres Bermuda (Midland 99) and 80 acres Alfalfa.   I'm not set on exactly what I'm going to do so I'm open to any and all comments or suggestions.  Also I wouldn't be able to do anything until the first of 2017 but I am trying to get ahead of the game.

Look forward to your comments.

New Holland BR7060 electrical problems

My husband bought a used nhbr7060 with almost 15,000 bales through it. It started doing odd things a few weeks ago while in operation, first it was wrapping the twine all throughout the bale, then not cutting the twine from bale to bale (was not happy to have to run 4 miles up the street curting twine out of trees from one field to another) then it stopped extending and retracting thr net wrap. So...over a thousand dollars in parts and service charges later, still no progress. We bought a new computer for it, new bale command monitor and had to put a new alternator in the tractor, it powered up once, beeped and died, now it won't even power up. We have been through the entire wiring harness, found where it has power and ground, fixed the tractor voltage issue so now have isolated it to the bailer but we've hit a brick wall. The dealer who has been out to look at it twice (moron didn't even bring tools with him) he has no idea, and just wants to throw parts at it. I fear that even if I spend another 700 plus dollars on a harness, it still won't fix the computer problem. Anyone out there experience a similar issue? Can anyone please tell me where to find a good wiring harness diagram (one showing what each wire does)? The one from the manual does not show this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am about ready to leave it out front for the repo men as I fear it's not worth the investment/aggervation. Thank you in advance.

Brand New Baler Damage, What to expect?

Hi everyone,  a month ago bought a new small square baler New Holland BC5070, we have baled aprox. 1200 bales with it. As i was finishing up a field, i tried to lift the hydraulic pickup reel, and it wouldn't  move.  After a closer look, I noticed a loose bolt and other missing bolts on the left side of the pickup. (looking from the front of baler). also noticed that the pickup bands have cause some damaged to the frame. I called the dealer this morning, they told me that the service department will get a hold of me. no phone call yet. What should I expect from the dealer/New Holland? should the repair it? Replace it?

I hate the idea of having a brand new expensive machine repaired when their assembly was at fault. appreciate your opinions.

Wrapping rained on hay

Just got done raking yesterday and had some rain come thru, hazy and overcast today, high only in the low to mid 80’s but a heat index in the mid to upper 90’s, its humid, looks like another day or two of rain before having a few clear days. 7 acres at home, another 18 a few miles away, raked at home first, ended up at the 18, considering drive and raking time the 7 at home would have been mostly dry and the same with the 18 by time I got to it, a few spots might have needed some hayguard.

Father wants to just bale it now and wrap it and see what happens, I’m pretty sure since it was close to being dry it’s not gonna ferment very well if at all, also pretty sure need to get the excess moisture out of it before baling or most likely it will mold instead.

Bought some wrapped hay from the auction once that I’m pretty sure was almost dry, got a rain, then they baled and wrapped, cows ate it, but weren’t very happy about it.

I’m of the opinion get it as dry as possible, bale it, shove it in a row somewhere and unroll this winter and let the cows pick thru what they will and lay on the rest. We routinely unroll some every winter anyway so the cows aren’t laying on frozen ground or in the mud if its one of those winters.

To those that wrap hay all the time, what say you?

Fall Alfalfa seeding tips

Hi guys,

So i have a field that is 11 Acres, We missed our spring seeding so now we have some work ahead of us. I plan to brush hog the field ( lot of Foxtail growing) then hit it with some Round Up. Now my question is should i hit the field with the Chisel Plow and disk about 10 days after i spray ? or do you think i should let everything burn off from the RU and then seed over what is killed off? Next questions i have is since i have never done a fall seeding should i just plant my alfalfa without or with a cover crop? i was thinking of putting some Annual Rye with it but wasn't sure? also how many pounds of seed per acre i was going with 15-18# and i was going to put about 2# or orchard grass with it.  Also I'll be seeding everything down with a Brillion seeder.

Thanks,

Chad

Timber acreage going into grass?

I have about 20 acres that I have cleared and would like to turn it into a pasture/hay field.  What is the thought of the board on 007 Bermuda grass and or what would be your recommendation of grass to start this ground with.  It is a peace of ground that has been in timber for the last 50+ years.  I'm located 30 miles south southeast of Jackson MS.

JD 336 needle not staying in home

Hello,

I'm new to the forum, but not new to farming   .  I upgraded my old John Deere 14T baler to a used 336 baler with a kicker.  Overall, I'm very pleased with the baler, as it was rebuilt with many new parts, including knotter, pump, and several other items.  I baled about 300 bales without a single problem, and filled 2 1/2 wagons.  But all of a sudden, the plunger safety stop would set, and sheer my flywheel sheer pin.  WHen I look to see what's going on, I noticed that the needles are not in home position.

I manually pulled the needles up into home and placed a new sheer pin.  Ran about 3 more bales and it did it again.

I tested the pull of the break, which states 60 lb's of pull.   I used a digital scale and i'm pulling a little more on the break.

I then lengthened the needle arm a bit to ensure the needles are out of the bale chamber when the stop was retracted.

I baled about 25 more bales and thought I fixed it.

Nope, it started doing it again and again.

I checked the dog spring and the timing.  Everything appears okay, and everything works just fine when I manually trip the knotter.

I'm stumped.   Maybe I need more tension on the break to hold the needles in home?   Any John Deere experts out there?

Thanks in advance.

Claas Quadrant 3300

lundi 11 juillet 2016

Anybody ever ran one of these balers? I hear they are impressive. I am looking to get a new machine and was curious about this baler. I am also considering a Krone as well. Which one is a better baler? I heard a couple negatives on the Krone, parts and holding their value were the biggest complaint I have heard. I know Claas choppers are really good so I figure their balers should be good to. Anyone have thoughts on these balers? Thanks!

John Deere 346 baler knotter issues

I'm visiting my grandpa in Oregon and he's having some issues with his 346's knotter. After running it by hand it appears the right and left knotter are out of sequence with each other. The right side seems to be breaking/fraying/missing knots the left is working great. I believe that one knitter (left) is correct but it seems the right one is beginning its know while the left is mid sequence. Is the even a possibility? If so how would I go about fixing it?
Thanks, Brady

Wanting a bale thrower for Hesston 4550

dimanche 10 juillet 2016

I've been pondering going to a bale thrower vs an accumulator.  Thrower racks seem relatively inexpensive compared to purchasing an accumulator, two grapples and another tractor.  I bought a very little used Hesston 4550 this last winter and we absolutely love it (except for the small non-hydraulic pickup!).  My middle son (11 yo) is now able to run the baler leaving me and my small 14 year old son on the racks.  I work midnights in a hospital and so can't always get the baling done and am tired of stacking and unstacking, etc.  I was thinking 5-6 thrower racks and my two boys could bale up 700-800 bales without much help from me.  That's all we usually do in most cuttings (small fields) anyways.  We have larger aspirations of putting up 10,000 bales a summer when we get more experience and my third son gets a few more years on him.

Long story, so my question is, where do I go to try to find a bale thrower for this older model of baler?  It's a Hesston 4550 but also has Fiat-Agri on it as well.  I assume there was some sort of merger of these companies back 25(?) years ago when it was made.  The normal equipment websites like tractorhouse and others don't seem to sell them and I don't have any other leads.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks  Tim

Update

I replaced 8 fingers on the NH 256 tonight and realized I could probably use another 8+ to get things how I want them.  I also realized every nut and bolt could probably be replaced.  I snapped a good deal of brittle bolts trying to get the nuts off...  I need to get 5 or 6 back brackets that are missing.  I greased it up really good and everything moves freely.

I did see in the manual that you can adjust the pivot ball upwards in the pivot bracket to produce a loose fluffy windrow.  I located the pivot bracket and pivot ball but had a hard time figuring out how to loosen it so I can raise the pivot ball to the top of the pivot bracket.

I also greased up the NH super 66 while I was outside.  I ran the knotter through a manual cycle and noticed that the knotter that is missing knots seems to have a twine finger out of adjustment.  The twine was above the finger so when it moved it did not move the twine.  I am looking in the manual to figure out how to adjust the twine finger position so it moves the twine where it's supposed to go.

I did observe that our mounting bracket adjustment is allowing the needles to deliver the twine exactly where it needs to go.  Twine 1 is being placed exactly where it needs to be and Twine 2 is being placed right next to twine 1.

I feel like I am really close to getting this baler making good knots on both sides.  I'll be back at it again tomorrow... and every day until I get it working!

Baling on Hils Approach

For the past 20 years, I have baled with a Gehl 1465 that made a 4x5 bale. I upgraded this year to a New Holland 4x6 baler and all is good on the flat ground. The Gehl made a nice bale, but it is soft, whereas the NH makes a bale that is tight and firm.

Now for the hillside fun!

My son did the baling on the first hillside, and when he opens the gate, the bale hits the kicker and takes off down the hill. I had to stop the bale with the loader tractor, or we would have flatten fences and anything else that got in the way.  It was like catching a bowling ball on a ski run.

Some ideas I have are as follows:

1.  Try to turn sideways to the hill before opening the gate, but even that has not always worked on the first hilly field he tried. They stilled rolled too far.

2.  Stop after the wrapping is done, and drive down to the bottom of the hill.  Less fence damage this way, but more time.

3.  Take bale kicker off. Have to go back to backing up on every bale.

4.  Out of ideas.

What do the members on the forum do?  Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

Dale

NH 575 timing out, way out.

OK a very long time since I've had any baler problems, especially since I got this 575 and got rid of my 336.

I got real good at timing the 336 thanks to some great videos etc., but this is a different animal.

Short version, I broke a flywheel shear pin because I overloaded the baler. It broke just after the knotter tripped.  The needle protection stop came out and blocked the crank, so I reset that, replaced the shear pin, and I finished the tie of that last bale.

So now the timing marks are off at the knotter clutch by about 1 1/2 inches. It worked fine but I want to get it back right.

Following the directions in the operators manuaI I loosen the front chain and try to jump it to correct the timing and I found it very hard to turn that shaft because I couldn't get the chain completely free. So I tried to use the flywheel for leverage and overcorrect the timing and then back up the flywheel.  Anyway I must have jumped the chain in the wrong direction and now the feeder forks are way out and hitting the plunger and the knotter is still out. What a mess. I can't time the feeder until I time the knotter but now the feeder hits the plunger! Catch 22.

How do I go back to square one and reset the whole deal. Seems like on the 336 I was able to remove a gear and jump the whole system but this machine is more complicated. I'd like to give it one more try before the dealer.

Thanks in advance.

Jeff

Do unopened rolls of net wrap keep well?

Hello folks,

How well do new unopened rolls of net wrap keep? If I got a good deal on enough for 3 or 4 years, would it store all right in the sealed packs for that period? Or should you buy it new each year like silage wrap?

Tedding right after cutting

samedi 9 juillet 2016

From my experience you cut, give it a day/or half a day, then ted. I've been seeing videos of people tedding right behind the mower on youtube. Is this done to bruise the stems while it's pliable, and in a way act as a conditioner?

Thanks for any thoughts,

Simonsen N-44G Fertilizer Spreader Chart

I stumbled across the above mentioned spreader and now own it. It is in good shape, but the chart for gate opening VS specific wt per cubic foot VS spread width chart is not on it. Wondering if anyone has one on theirs that they could photograph. I found the N-44D model's chart online, but not the G model. Not sure if same or different. Having a buggy is a little out of my expectations, but for $300, I couldn't NOT buy it.

RTV X900 vs. X1120 D

Started off looking at the X900 as I think it has plenty of power for my needs. But, drove a X1120 D and there is a noticeable difference in power.

Talked with a dealer in Ok. last week and he said they have had a hard time getting rid of their X1120's. They sell way more 900's.

Other than higher price, is there a problem with the X1120 engine/ Hydoestate combo. I know some do not like the doors but for trail riding I think they are an improvement.

Are they about a $1500 up charge compared to the X900?

Pros cons to the X1120 vs. the X900?

Thanks in advance and glad I found this forum!

Foxtail

To preface from earlier;

Posted 12 March 2016 - 08:49 PM

Just a follow up to last year.....last year I sprayed with 12 oz. of glyphosate on my upland where i had a outbreak of little barley. It killed about 1/2 of it and the other half was stunted so badly it never matured.

This year there is almost none of the little barley germinated....just sprigs here and there. So, it worked really well.... the gly never killed my fescue and really just slowed it slightly as I got about a normal cutting of hay in the area that I sprayed.

12oz. per acre worked very well.....I would not go with 16oz. as I tried 16oz. on another field to try to kill some foxtail and some of the grasses sustained damage.

Regards, Mike

Currently,

So I mentioned earlier last month about how I have been invaded by Barnyard grass and Foxtail in my spring seeding of Orchard grass.....loving to experiment....and not afraid to, I sprayed 1/2 the field last week with 12 oz. per acre of Cornerstone glyphosate. Its been about 4 days. I went down this morning and looked it over and it appears that the only thing dying is some foxtail and crabgrass. But this is NOT conclusive...it's still early. BUT, the foxtail had just began to form seeds when I sprayed and this morning I saw that ALL of the tiny foxtail seeds all falling off the plumes.....prematurely!    Interesting.

Regards, Mike
